Amorgos Island

Amorgos is an island of a particular natural beauty. It is a seductive island that will lead you to the path of romanticism, sensuality and happiness. An island so unique that it creates the sense that you are in a different civilization, awaking inside you every happy memory and every sweet and tender emotion.

The island, which is stretched out in a serpent-like fashion is picturesque, offering spectacular cliffs. The bays are lined with fruit-trees and gardens, with tamarisks and bamboo separating the gardens from the beach. You will notice a deep attachment to this place before long.

Amorgos has two beautiful ports, Aegiali and Katapola. Aegiali offers unique landscapes and golden beaches including a refugee place for seals. Although very touristy, it has still managed to keep all the characteristics of a traditional Greek fishing harbor. There are several ancient monuments and churches to see. Katapola is the main port, which offers orange and lemon orchards, a fishing village and a beautiful secluded beach. The acropolis of the ancient Minoa on Moudoulia hill, offers a very impressive panoramic of the bay. Not to be missed here is the church Our Lady of Panagia Katapoliani, the remains of the temple of Pithios Apollonas (Apollo) and the Katapola Spring, with its water flowing through an ancient aqueduct to reach the Katapola faucet, considered to be a monument.

Hora, beautiful yet simplistic, is the capital and its winding streets are free of cars. While here you should visit the astonishing Monastery of Hozoviotissa. Not only will you get a panoramic view of the whole island but inside you will discover forty churches and chapels, including the remarkable Agios Fanourios, which is claimed to be the smallest chapel in Greece, as it can only accommodate two people at a time.

Langada is a very beautiful village offering olive groves, huge mountains and a ledge, which is home to the small Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) Church. Narrow roads and stony paths lead to several sites, such as the Church of Panagia Epanohoriani, Dri, Agios (Saint) Panteleimonas, the Machos mill area and the Araklos ravine.

Potamos is a very pretty village, which appears to be a balcony to the Aegean Sea offers an exquisitely situated deep gorge that seems to disappear behind the rocky mountains of Krikellos. Within the lower portion of the village, you will discover the Church of Analipsis (Ascension) The Upper part of the village seems to be completely untouched by the "materialistic" modern world, with its narrow streets and the spotless white corners.

Other beaches on the island offer fine sand and deep blue and crystal clear waters. One of the many beaches that you should experience is Mourou Beach, as it will prove to be beyond your expectations.

There are bars, cafes and taverns on the waterfront, rooms to rent, a disco, mini-markets and tourist shops for your pleasure. Looking for an intense nightlife? Then the town of Katapola is the place to be.

If you haven't visited Amorgos you are surely missing an unparalleled experience. The only danger is that when you'll be there, the island's secretive charm combined with its seductive nature will transform you into its eternal fan and incurable lover...
