Lefkada (Lefkas) is a very special island, which is separated from mainland Greece by a 25-meter artificial canal and two bridges connect it. Replete with beautiful beaches, impressive sites and hospitable inhabitants, Lefkada also possesses a mountainous terrain, lush, green landscape and dense vegetation, making it unlike many other Greek Islands.
It is a cultural center, with many historical sites, monuments and traditional houses, where some women still wear traditional clothes, creating a stunning image.
Lefkada is a very pleasant, friendly, typical Greek town. The main shopping street, which runs through the center of town, is free of vehicles for your safety and convenience. You will find fish shops, boutiques and more all placed side by side. The town square is full of cafes where you can just sit, relax and watch the world go by. There are, of course, numerous bars and restaurants available to you throughout the island for your dining pleasure.
The many beautiful beaches await you, some pebbled and shingled, some of white sand and the water is always very clear. There are five windmills on the beaches west of town. Along with the others, Kathisma Beach is full of life. It offers restaurants and kiosks within easy reach and activities galore. Besides swimming, you can play volleyball and tennis or go parasailing and hand gliding from the steep hill above. Windsurfing and kite surfing are very popular in the summer afternoons, when a thermal wind blows across the island. Yachting, diving and snorkeling are also favorite pastimes here too.
Enjoy other outdoor activities like horseback riding through the olive groves. You can also go on your own or join a group and cycle across the island to enjoy the sights.
There are many little alleyways and streets to explore, where you will find several interesting places to visit, such as: The Archaeological and Folk Art Museums, the Public Library, the Phonograph Museum, a Byzantine Art Gallery and many churches. A little further out of town is the impressive Frankish fortress of Ayia Mavra and the Faneromeni Monastery. The Frankish castle of Santa Mauro, Agios Nikitas, a traditional, picturesque fishing hamlet, the island village of Karlu, known for its handmade traditional embroideries are other sights, which you’ll want to see while you’re here.
In the summer you can converge with people from all over the world who come to enjoy the Festivals of Literature and Art, and the International Festival of Folklore and Dance. Don’t miss out on seeing World class Cycle Racing, Formula Three Speedboat Racing, and one of the best Philharmonic orchestras in Greece, for unforgettable experiences.
The island has a great variety of bars, pubs, nightclubs and places with live music, which attract many who to dance and party all night long.
For your accommodation on Lefkada (Lefkas), there are countless hotels, bungalows, apartments, studios, and rooms for rent and vacation villas throughout Lefkada so you‘ll never want for accommodations, which will fit your budget.
