Orei is a lush green fishing village, situated on the peninsula of Lihada, in the northern part of the island, within a distance of 25 kilometers from the Baths of Edipsos and 135 kilometers away from Chalkida. Nearby, there are a few more beautiful picturesque settlements such as Gregolimano, Agios Georgios and Gialtra. Orei is connected through seaways with Chalkida, Volos, Skiathos and Skopelos. The area is very developed in tourist facilities and offers the visitors a wide variety of lodging facilities, lots of restaurants and different options of entertainment as well as a few remarkable beaches for to swim and sunbathe.
Orei has a history of thousands of years, as the rest of the Evia Island. This has been confirmed from the examination of various archaeological findings that were discovered in the area, such as sculptures and ceramics. The name of the village is ancient as well and originates from ancient town Oreos. Today, the visitor has the opportunity to see the Marble Bull in the nearby beach of the village, dating back to the Hellenistic period and particularly from the 4th century B.C., as well as the ruins of the ancient acropolis. There are also a few monuments of other periods such as a Venetian and a Turkish Castle and also the Byzantine church of Agios Vasilios, situated right below. Some of the findings that have been discovered are displayed in the Hall of the Municipal Collection of the village and some other in the Museum of Berlin. |
