Gouves is a small town located 20 kilometers east of Heraklion. It is a well-developed tourist resort with long sandy beaches, traditional settlements and interesting archeological sites. West of Gouves there are also the tourist resorts of Kokkini Hani and Amnisos, both with similar attractions, and to the east you will find Crete's most popular resort, Hersonisos. In the location of Kato Gouves, just outside of the village, there’s a long sandy beach. Nearby you will find a variety of lodging facilities, from large hotels to rooms to let and apartments, as well as many restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and shops. Within a smal distance there are also some beautiful and picturesque villages along with some interesting sights, such as the monastery of Agios Ioannis Theologos. The “Skotino Cave” is located about 6 km away and it is one of the largest and most spectacular in Crete. About only 1 kilometer away from the summer resort of Amnisos, which is within a distance of 7 kilometers away from Heraklion city, you will be able to visit the mysterious caves of Eileithyia. The most important archeological sites of the area are the Minoan ruins in Kokkini Hani and in Amnisos.
