RHODES (CAPITAL)
  GENERAL INFORMATION
The modern town of Rhodes dates back to the years of the Ottoman Empire. At that time, the Greek Orthodox population of the area were forced out of the Old Town and started to settle outside its walls, gradually creating the new town. Today the new town is known for the cosmopolitan atmosphere that is typical of a modern tourist resort, its imposing public buildings of bizarre architecture that combines modern art with medieval tradition, such as the Archbishop’s Palace, the Annunciation church, the Central Post Office, Town hall, Theatre and Government House, all of them dating back to the Italian period, you can admire them alongside the esplanade. You will also be able to see some wide roads with rows of trees on the sides, parks, beaches, luxurious hotels and the frequented trade centre. As you will be entering the city, you will have the chance to see non the sides of the entrance of Mandraki port, two bronze deers (elaphos and elaphina), which, as time went by, became the tradamerk of the modern city of Rhodes. Where the deers are placed today, during the ancient years used to stand the marvellous bronze statue of the “Colossus”, which unfortunately couldn’t be saved. In the mole you will also be able to see the Lighthouse Tower of Agios Nikolaos and three old picturesque windmills. If you head to the north you will have a chance to visit the Aquarium.
